The Complete History of Chelmsford Comedy Club
Bringing Laughter to Essex Since 1996

The Complete History of Chelmsford Comedy Club – Bringing Laughter to Essex Since 1996
For nearly three decades, one name has become synonymous with live comedy in Chelmsford – Chelmsford Comedy Club.
Since opening its doors in 1996, Chelmsford Comedy Club has welcomed thousands of comedy lovers and introduced audiences to some of Britain's biggest comedy stars, many long before they became household names. Today, the club continues that tradition, bringing the very best professional comedians to Chelmsford every month.
It All Started in 1996...
Back in 1996, live stand-up comedy was beginning to explode across Britain.
Shows like Have I Got News For You were introducing audiences to a new generation of comedians, while comedy clubs were becoming the place to discover tomorrow's stars.
Chelmsford deserved a professional comedy club of its own.
That vision became reality when Chelmsford Comedy Club launched at the Cramphorn Theatre, creating a regular home for professional stand-up comedy in the city. The Cramphorn Theatre, now known as Chelmsford Theatre Studio, had already established itself as an intimate performance venue, making it the perfect setting for live comedy.
Few could have imagined that those early nights would become the beginning of one of Essex's longest-running comedy success stories.
Before They Became Household Names...
One of the greatest pleasures of attending Chelmsford Comedy Club has always been discovering incredible comedians before television made them famous.
Over the years, audiences have laughed with performers who would go on to become some of Britain's biggest comedy names.
Among those who have appeared during the club's history are:
Michael McIntyre
Lee Mack
Jimmy Carr
Jack Whitehall
Russell Howard
Micky Flanagan
Al Murray
Omid Djalili
Long before arena tours, television fame and bestselling DVDs, many of these comedians were honing their craft in intimate comedy clubs like Chelmsford, creating unforgettable evenings for local audiences.
Looking back today, it's remarkable to realise just how many future stars have performed on our stage.
The Waterfront Years
As Chelmsford Comedy Club grew in popularity, it moved to The Waterfront Place, where audiences continued to enjoy first-class stand-up comedy from many of the UK's finest performers.
The Waterfront quickly became another memorable chapter in the club's history.
Week after week, audiences returned knowing they would see professional comedians who were appearing regularly on television, national tours and major comedy festivals.
It was during this period that Chelmsford Comedy Club firmly established its reputation for quality.
Unlike open-mic nights or amateur comedy evenings, audiences knew every ticket guaranteed an evening of professional entertainment.
That commitment has never changed.
A New Home at Dukes
As the years passed, the laughter moved once again—this time to Dukes.
The venue brought another exciting chapter to Chelmsford Comedy Club's story.
Regular customers followed the club, new audiences discovered live comedy for the first time, and month after month another generation of comedians took to the stage.
Although the venues changed, one thing never did...
Only the very best professional comedians appeared on our stage.
That promise has been the foundation of Chelmsford Comedy Club since the very first show.
